The carefree days of summer are here once again with their promise of sunshine, pools, playing outdoors, grilling, and vacation. The kids are out of school, and there is much fun to be had. Even though the days are less organized and chaotic, there are still measures all individuals and families should take to stay safe during the summer months.
How to Prioritize Summer Health
Each season of the year offers different challenges for staying healthy. In the summer, the days are longer, the sun is hotter, and the bugs are plentiful. These are just some of the things that make summer fun, but enjoying the season doesn’t mean you should forget to take care of yourself and the ones you love. Here are a few ways to stay healthy this summer.
Pack a First Aid Kit – It’s a good idea always to be prepared, especially in the summer, when outdoor activities are common. Keep a kit in your car, your home, and plan to take one with you on vacation. Stock your first aid kit with essentials for an emergency as well as for everyday injuries.
Take Care of Your Skin – Applying sunscreen when outdoors is critical during the summer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Check out the Summer Skin Health Tips blog for more details on how to protect your skin.
Stay Hydrated – It is easy to become dehydrated in the summer due to sweating, increased activity, and simply being distracted. A good rule of thumb is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. You may need more during the summer, depending on the amount of physical exertion, the heat, and the humidity. Know the signs of being dehydrated and always bring extra water with you wherever you go.
Wear Sunglasses – Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block out UV light. Get in the habit of wearing them when driving and when spending time outdoors.
Practice Bug Prevention – Sumer bugs can be annoying. Learn how to keep them at bay by reading the Summer Bugs and Bites Blog.
Summertime Fun
Summer is also a perfect time to get your annual doctors, dentist, and eye appointments taken care of. If you have children, you won’t have to worry about checking them out of school. Be sure to check with your health insurance company to make sure your appointments are covered. Make a list of questions you have and be honest with your doctor.
Summer is so much fun, especially if you enjoy it with the ones you love while staying safe. Be sure to take advantage of summer’s fruits and vegetables that aren’t always available. Berries, melons, corn, and many more options are wonderful additions to your diet and chock full of nutrients. Adding color to your diet is just another great way to take good care of yourself. Enjoy your summer and all it has to offer, it won’t last long!
